Not to ask for more, For what is at my door.
For food and drink, for gentle rain,

Remembrance from the Beaumont Enterprise Newspaper

Merger principal, 'BSID' trustee dies

ShawHoward Trahan chuckled fondly as he remembered his close friend, Preston Shaw.

"He was quite a pleasing person," Trahan, a school board trustee for the Beaumont Independent School District said. Among highlights of his professional career, Shaw was known as the principal who successfully merged the Beaumont Charleton-Pollard and French high schools into Central High School, bringing together black and white students without any problems, Trahan said.

"We anticipated tensions there," Trahan said. "... I call him a merger principal."

As a friend, Trahan remembered Shaw as a religious man who enjoyed golf, swimming and singing - mostly 1960s-1970s era soul music.

W. Preston Shaw died Sunday of a heart attack at Christus St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont at age 64.

He will be greatly missed, particularly in the BISD, where he had worked his way from teacher to principal to assistant superintendent in his nearly 40 year career there, Trahan said.

"He's going to be hard to replace," Trahan said in a telephone interview Sunday. "It's going to be a challenge to find someone capable of performing the way he performed."

Shaw had a doctorate in educational administration from Texas A&M University. He started out as a premed student at Huston-Tillotson College in Austin, but according to a 1992 Enterprise story, "that didn't work out."

After receiving his Bachelor of Science in pre med, Shaw accepted an appointment as a park ranger at Yellowstone National Park. From there he went to Oklahoma, where he began teaching physics and chemistry.

"After I was there one month, I was so hooked on education I completed the 18 hours needed for certification," Shaw said in the 1992 story. "I don't regret it."

Shaw was active in the community, serving on numerous boards of directors and receiving honors such as the Martin Luther King Humanitarian Award from the National Association of University Women. In 1991, the Texas Association of Secondary School Principals named Shaw outstanding principal for Region V.

Daisy McKerson-Stallworth
Always Willing To Accept A Smile And A Hug

Obituary from The News Tribune

Daisy Marie McKerson Stallworth, beloved daughter, wife, mother and grandmother, went home to our Savior Jesus Christ on Sept. 1, 1997.  She began her journey on Oct. 18, 1939 in Ardmore, OK. Daisy was a graduate of Ardmore Douglas High School and Pacific Lutheran University, which honored her during its Centennial as one of the 100 outstanding graduates.  Daisy, who had worked in the private sector as a computer operator, began her governmental career with the City of Tacoma as a planning aide.  Seizing an opportunity to further develop her leadership and technical skills, she moved to the Department of Community Development as a program development specialist.  During her tenure with the city, she was instrumental in the development of several major community infrastructure projects.

Her next career move was to county government as manager of the Community Development Block Grant Program in 1983.  Three years later she was appointed director of the Department of Community and Economic Development.  As a department director, Daisy was committed to the pursuit of excellence and displayed the attitude of a doer, often commenting there are "no problems, just opportunities."  Stressing team work, life-long learning and volunteerism as a means of promoting personal growth, she strove to instill a sense of professionalism among the employees who reported to her.  Daisy soared to the occasion when Pierce County began to re-invent itself by overseeing the merger and reorganization of four departments into two.  These mergers improved teamwork, efficiency, service delivery and reduced operational overhead.

Daisy was a strong advocate for the community and acted as a community activist.  As the past president of several community-wide organizations, she was able to bring her unique leadership style to all that she did.  She was active with Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Zeta Omega Omega Chapter; University of Puget Sound Board of Visitors for the School fo Business Administration; NDABA Cultural Ensemble, A+ Fund; Forward Washington Board member; American Leadership Forum Board of Directors; Broadway Theatre District Task Force; Junior League of Tacoma Community Advisory Board; and other organizations.

Daisy is survived by her husband, Leroy; a son Luke A. Stevenson Jr. of Portland; two daughters, Stephanie M. Caldwell of Tacoma and Sonja L. Stevenson of Oak Harbor; five grandchildren, (Modest, Cassandra, Chasse, Charlette, and Cana) and two dogs Jamilla and Zeus.  Daisy was blessed to have a bevy of friends and family at her bedside as she prepared for her sunset including her parents Alfred and Mazola McKerson, Sr. of Ardmore; two brothers, Donald and Alfred McKerson, both of Atlanta; a sister, Flossie Thurston of Oklahoma City; and an Aunt, Mrs. Verna M. Covington of Phoenix.

Daisy will be missed, her legacy will forever be extended as loved ones continue to live and support the ideals and visions for which she so courageously stood.  A memorial service will be celebrated Saturday, Sept. 6,1997, at 11 a.m. in Allen AME Church, 1223 Martin Luther King Jr Way. Viewing will be conducted all day Friday, Sept. 5, at Mountain View Funeral Home.

He graduated from Frederick Douglass High school, class of 1951, with Honors, and was Valedictorian of his class.  He was an active member of the football team, the Band and Honor Society.

As a young man, his interests were nature, animals and friendship.

After his arrival in New York, he worked as a truck driver for the Ideal Trucking Company, until his retirement in 1995.
